With just 12 days remaining until the transfer window closes, Derby County still has significant work to do in terms of strengthening their squad.

Fresh off a great victory over Middlesbrough, Paul Warne and his recruitment team are actively evaluating their options for new signings, with a goal of securing three more players before the deadline.

Warne mentioned after Saturday’s game that no deals are imminent, as he’s dependent on Premier League clubs still deciding on their loan arrangements. Despite this, Derbyshire Live explores what an ideal end to the transfer window would look like for Warne as he aims to assemble a competitive squad for the Championship season.

The Need for a Number Nine

Paul Warne has been clear about his desire to bolster the attack, despite the boost of Jerry Yates returning from a suspension this weekend. While Yates will fulfill the role of a traditional number nine, there’s a consensus that Derby needs another forward with significant experience, preferably in the Championship. Warne has noted that any addition will likely be a loan deal, as he continues to compete with other clubs for a new striker.

Warne is targeting either a pacey forward who can stretch defenses or one who excels at holding up the ball and feeding Derby’s wingers. Securing such a player would be a welcome boost.

 Securing a Number Ten

Derby’s current style heavily relies on wing play, utilizing both wingers and full-backs to deliver crosses that should be capitalized on by Yates. However, the ability to break through the middle is also crucial. Kenzo Goudmijn has been playing in an advanced midfield role recently but is still adjusting to the physical demands of English football.

While Derby has hard workers like Ben Osborn and Premier League-caliber players like David Ozoh, they lack a creative midfielder who can unlock defenses and contribute goals from midfield. Adding such a player, likely via a Premier League loan, would greatly relieve the pressure on the forwards.

Adding a Centre-Back

Warne has expressed interest in bringing in another centre-back, especially after Eiran Cashin’s recent head injury highlighted the need for depth. While Sonny Bradley stepped in, there’s concern about the lack of a pacey and experienced backup. Adding a centre-back who can not only defend but also play out from the back would be ideal, as Cashin is currently the best at distributing from the back. Warne hopes to find another player with the qualities of Fikayo Tomori to strengthen the backline.
