As the 2024 NHL Draft was wrapping up, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Dallas Stars executed a significant trade. The Maple Leafs acquired the rights to Chris Tanev, a player who has been on their radar since Brad Treliving became GM.

Following the trade, Maple Leafs fans anticipated that the deal would be favorable for their team. Tanev, a native of Toronto, explained why he chose to sign with the Maple Leafs rather than re-signing with the Stars.

“You do have lower state taxes in Dallas, but I’ve played in Canada for 14 years. I’m from here, and my wife’s family is from around here. Additionally, there’s a departure tax when leaving Canada to become a U.S. citizen,” Tanev said.

The proximity to home was the primary factor in his decision to join the Maple Leafs.
