The Baltimore Orioles are signing former Oakland A’s third baseman J.D. Davis, as reported by Jon Heyman of The New York Post. According to Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner, this will be a minor-league contract.
This will mark Davis’ fourth MLB team this year. He started 2024 with the San Francisco Giants and was with them through much of Spring Training before being released after the team signed Matt Chapman. Davis then joined the A’s on a one-year, $2.5 million deal with $1 million in incentives.
Davis had a solid start with the A’s, but struggled early in April and was placed on the IL with a right adductor strain. During his absence, Abraham Toro performed well and took over third base, leaving Davis with limited playing time upon his return. He primarily played first base and designated hitter, but opportunities were inconsistent.
In early June, top prospect Tyler Soderstrom excelled at first base for the A’s, further reducing Davis’ playing time. Davis started only four games from June 1 to June 17 and was DFA’d on June 18. He was then traded to the New York Yankees for Jordan Groshans and started six games for them before being DFA’d again on July 28.
Davis has hit .218 with a .293 OBP, four home runs, and a .631 OPS in 46 games this season.
The Orioles’ acquisition of Davis comes after losing All-Star third baseman Jordan Westburg to the IL with a right hand fracture. They hope Westburg will return before the end of the season, but in the meantime, prospect Coby Mayo will fill in at third base. Despite Mayo’s slow start, the Orioles, who are tied for the NL East lead at 68-47, are seeking additional stability. Davis, though struggling this season, brings veteran experience and could help solidify third base until Westburg’s return.
