SAD NEWS: 3 Maple Leafs in danger of losing roster spot in 2024-25

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ roster is set to change significantly this season. With several offseason additions and the notable progress of top prospects like Easton Cowan, competition for roster spots will be intense. Some players who might have been considered secure are now facing uncertainty as nothing is finalized yet.

Training camp will see fierce competition, and some players must elevate their game. Here are three players who are at risk of losing their spots for the 2024-25 season:

Nick Robertson
Nick Robertson’s situation is one of the major offseason stories. After receiving a qualifying offer from the Maple Leafs but requesting a trade, Robertson faces a crucial season. The team’s offer reflected their belief in the 22-year-old winger, with GM Brad Treliving highlighting a “great opportunity” for him. Last season, Robertson showed promise with 27 points in 56 games, and his energetic play translated well into the postseason, where he had the highest scoring chances for percentage and the second-best high danger chances for percentage at five-on-five. However, with Matthew Knies moving ahead of him on the depth chart and Max Domi eyeing a top-line spot, Robertson is likely battling for a third-line role. The rise of Bobby McMann could further jeopardize his position, and if he underperforms in camp, the Leafs might consider moving him.

Timothy Liljegren
Timothy Liljegren is also facing a critical season. Currently slotted for the right-side third pairing, Liljegren needs to make significant strides. Despite showing potential with 23 points in 55 games last season, inconsistencies and injuries have hindered his progress. The uncertainty surrounding Jani Hakanpää’s contract adds to the pressure on Liljegren. At 25, Liljegren must prove he can consistently contribute at the NHL level. While Hakanpää’s signing is pending, another right-side defender could be brought in, putting additional pressure on Liljegren.

David Kämpf
David Kämpf, a key defensive and penalty-kill specialist, is also under scrutiny. His $2.4 million cap hit as a fourth-liner for the next three seasons could be a burden. Kämpf had his least productive season last year with 19 points, down from the 25-point mark he reached the previous two seasons. Although he’s solid defensively, his high cap hit could make him expendable. Fraser Minten, who impressed in a brief stint last season, could potentially take Kämpf’s spot with his strong two-way game and offensive upside.

All three—Robertson, Liljegren, and Kämpf—will need to up their game to secure their spots on the team. Their ability to adapt and perform will be crucial as the Maple Leafs’ roster undergoes significant changes.
