NHL analyst Jon Seitzer advises against the Toronto Maple Leafs pursuing Patrik Laine, despite his request for a trade from the Columbus Blue Jackets. Although Laine has been a popular name in trade rumors and could potentially strengthen the Maple Leafs’ forward group, Seitzer believes that the intense scrutiny and high expectations in Toronto might not be ideal for Laine, who is dealing with mental health issues. Seitzer cites the media pressure on players like Mitch Marner and John Tavares as potential obstacles for Laine and questions whether Laine might even include Toronto on his no-trade list.
Laine, who struggled last season with only 6 goals and 3 assists in 18 games, has two years remaining on his $8.7 million annual contract. Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell has stated that he is reluctant to retain salary in a trade for Laine, which could be complicating the trade talks.
Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs have focused on strengthening their defense this offseason, signing Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and goalie Anthony Stolarz, while losing Tyler Bertuzzi to free agency and still needing to re-sign RFA Nick Robertson.
