At 27, Simone Biles secured her seventh Olympic gold medal by winning the women’s vault for the second time, eight years after her first victory in Rio de Janeiro. She achieved an average score of 15.300 with her signature Yurchenko double pike and Cheng vaults.
Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, who finished as the runner-up to Biles in the all-around final, claimed silver, while American Jade Carey took bronze. Biles is now only the second woman to win gold in the vault twice, joining Vera Caslavska of Czechoslovakia, who achieved the feat in 1964 and 1968. With 10 Olympic medals, Biles is tied for the third most by a female gymnast and holds the record for the most medals at major international competitions with 40.
The Bercy Arena erupted with cheers as Biles, in a sequined red leotard, delivered a memorable performance that may be her final vault competition. She executed her Yurchenko double pike with impressive precision, although a slight error on landing—her right foot stepping on the out-of-bounds line—cost her a tenth of a point. Nevertheless, her score of 15.700 ensured her victory, as she nearly stuck her Cheng vault, which involves a roundoff onto the springboard, a half twist onto the block, and 1 1/2 twists in a forward somersault.
