One of the standout performers in Coventry City’s pre-season has been young striker Justin Obikwu. The 20-year-old has impressed manager Mark Robins, earning a place in the first-team summer squad. Obikwu’s pace and athleticism have caught the eye in recent matches.
He scored in the opening 3-0 victory over Port Vale and continued his strong form in the 3-1 win at Stevenage, where he not only won and converted a penalty but also assisted Fabio Tavares for a goal. Obikwu almost added another goal himself, but his effort was superbly saved by the goalkeeper.
Robins praised Obikwu’s performance at the Lamex Stadium on July 23, highlighting his incredible work rate and key contributions, including winning the penalty and providing an assist. Despite several chances, the opposition goalkeeper made some excellent saves, including a header from Obikwu.
With Matty Godden’s departure leaving a gap up front, Coventry City might benefit from Obikwu’s different style compared to the more traditional strikers, Ellis Simms and Haji Wright. Robins acknowledged Obikwu’s significant improvement over the past year, noting his successful loan spell at Grimsby. While Obikwu has shown promise, Robins feels he is best served staying with the team through pre-season before any further decisions are made about his future involvement.
