The Boston Bruins lost significant depth on the wing this summer, with Jake DeBrusk, Danton Heinen, James van Riemsdyk, and Pat Maroon all departing from last season’s roster. While it’s expected that the Bruins will have their prospects compete for roster spots during training camp, adding another experienced winger would be beneficial.
The Bruins are not in a position to make a notable acquisition before the season starts, as restricted free agent Jeremy Swayman still needs a new contract. As a star entering his prime, Swayman is expected to command a substantial salary.
Therefore, if the Bruins want to add depth to their roster at training camp, they will need to target bargain options or PTO candidates. One intriguing free agent who could be a good fit for Boston is Dominik Kubalik.
Kubalik had a tough season with the Ottawa Senators, posting career lows of 11 goals and 15 points in 74 games. The fit in Ottawa wasn’t ideal for Kubalik, but he could rebound with another opportunity. For instance, in the 2022-23 season with the Detroit Red Wings, Kubalik proved to be a solid middle-six winger, recording 20 goals and 45 points in 81 games for the Original Six club.
Additionally, in his four seasons prior to being traded to the Senators, Kubalik consistently recorded at least 15 goals and 32 points each season. This includes his standout rookie season with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2019-20, where he scored 30 goals and amassed 46 points.
Considering Kubalik’s proven track record and the Bruins’ need for additional depth on the wing, he could be a valuable addition if signed on a PTO. He has the potential to mirror the success of last year’s PTO signee, Danton Heinen.
