Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman is poised for a lucrative contract, with NHL.com’s Dan Rosen projecting that his deal could exceed $9 million per season. As a restricted free agent, the 25-year-old Swayman is in a strong negotiating position, especially since the Bruins have just under $9 million in salary cap space to finalize his contract. The two sides opted against arbitration, and while there’s a slim chance of an offer sheet, most believe they’ll come to an agreement.

Swayman’s impressive statistics—79 wins, a 2.34 goals-against average (GAA), a .919 save percentage, and 12 shutouts in 132 NHL games—highlight his value. After a career-high 44 games last season and a standout performance that led the Bruins to trade Linus Ullmark, Swayman established himself as Boston’s number-one goalie. His 25 wins, 2.53 GAA, .916 save percentage, and three shutouts contributed to the Bruins’ decision to make him their top option, but the team faces criticism for potentially giving Swayman’s camp increased leverage.

Comparatively, Rosen notes several contracts for goalies that might inform Swayman’s deal. Juuse Saros, who is four years older, signed an eight-year, $61.92 million contract ($7.74 million AAV) with the Nashville Predators before reaching unrestricted free agency. Connor Hellebuyck secured a seven-year, $59.5 million deal ($8.5 million AAV) with the Winnipeg Jets at age 30. Thatcher Demko, also 25, signed a five-year, $25 million deal ($5 million AAV) with the Vancouver Canucks. Andrei Vasilevskiy, who is the same age as Swayman, signed an eight-year, $76 million contract ($9.5 million AAV) with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2019 after winning the Vezina Trophy.

If Swayman opts for an eight-year deal, the AAV might slightly drop below $9 million due to the longer term. However, a five- or six-year contract could push his AAV to around $10 million, which might necessitate a significant roster move by the Bruins.
