Trade Proposal Sees Alex Pietrangelo Headed to Toronto Maple Leafs
There have been ongoing rumors about Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner being traded this summer, with the Vegas Golden Knights among the teams reportedly interested in acquiring him.
With Vegas losing significant forwards Jonathan Marchessault and Chandler Stephenson to free agency, Marner has been frequently mentioned as a potential addition to strengthen their offense. PuckPedia, a site offering a trade simulation tool called PuckGM, recently showcased a proposed trade that would send Marner to Vegas in exchange for defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, along with other players.
Proposed Trade:
Toronto Maple Leafs Receive:
- Alex Pietrangelo
- William Karlsson
Vegas Golden Knights Receive:
- Mitch Marner
- Timothy Liljegren
This 2-for-2 trade appears to offer benefits for both teams. Toronto would gain a defensive upgrade in Pietrangelo and additional offense from Karlsson, who tallied 60 points last season and has a $5.9 million annual salary for the next three years.
For Vegas, Marner would provide a significant offensive boost and could serve as a playmaker for Mark Stone and Jack Eichel. The addition of Liljegren, a former first-round pick, could help offset the loss of Pietrangelo. Liljegren recently signed a two-year, $6 million contract with Toronto but remains a topic of trade speculation.
Pietrangelo’s contract, which has three years remaining at $8.8 million per season, includes a full no-movement clause, meaning he would need to approve any trade.
Rumors and Speculation
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman had previously connected Marner to the Golden Knights, noting their abundance of defensemen as a potential trade asset. While Shea Theodore was a frequently mentioned name in these discussions, one PuckPedia user proposed trading Pietrangelo instead. Logan Thompson, another player linked to trade talks, was dealt to the Washington Capitals during the NHL draft.
Despite the trade rumors, newly appointed Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube expressed enthusiasm about working with Marner, praising his character and skills. However, Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving has not provided any updates regarding Marner’s trade status, emphasizing the team’s appreciation for his talent.
