How Michigan football can cover for the loss of Rod Moore

When Keon Sabb’s transfer to Alabama was announced in the spring, it left many wondering about Michigan football’s safety situation. With two experienced safeties departing before April, Michigan needed to find replacements.

Will Johnson is well-regarded as a dominant cornerback, but Michigan also needs strong performances from their safeties. Here’s a closer look at the situation:

Quinten Johnson, a six-year safety, could be a key player. His extensive experience provides both on-field and locker room leadership. Over his career, Johnson has honed his ability to read opponents’ tendencies and make smart plays. His knowledge allows him to excel in zone coverage, and he’s adept at deciding when to play press-man or give a cushion. His experience helps him stay sharp against play-action passes and guide corners into proper positions, making him a valuable asset to the team.

Makari Page is expected to start alongside Johnson. Page, a senior, began 13 games at safety in 2023, recording 41 tackles and two pass breakups. He made significant contributions during the college football playoffs, including six tackles against Alabama in the semifinals and versatile play in the National Championship against Washington, where he played both nickel back and safety.

With Johnson’s depth of knowledge and Page’s starting experience, this duo should solidify the safety position for Michigan football in 2024.
