And now the end might be in sight. There is growing speculation that James Tavernier’s time at Rangers could be coming to an end. Trabzonspor initially made a move, followed by reports that the captain had agreed to terms with the Super Lig club.

The 32-year-old has been connected with a reunion with Steven Gerrard since last summer, which has always seemed the more probable outcome.

Rangers fans weigh in as James Tavernier’s potential exit looms.

During the training camp in the Netherlands, Philippe Clement emphasized that every player has a price:

“If there’s somebody coming with the right amount of money, we will see, we will discuss.

“But you always need to see, then you need to replace somebody, and you need enough money to replace them to make it better, otherwise it is also of no use. It’s finding a balance in that way.”

The positive aspect is that Tavernier doesn’t necessarily need to be replaced. Dujon Sterling has had a year to settle in and has impressed in almost every position, despite not getting a consistent run in his preferred right-back role. Adam Devine and Leon King can both provide cover, with Rangers already having missed out on Ben Johnson and Reuell Walters.

The money potentially coming in for Tavernier should be allocated elsewhere. If it can cover most of the cost to buy Abdallah Sima or Adama Traore, then it’s a straightforward decision.

Tavernier has achieved a lot in terms of personal recognition, even though the silverware won during his tenure hasn’t been sufficient. Despite the feeling that the time is right, the captain still deserves respect for his consistency over the years.

Tavernier couldn’t have done much more to succeed at Rangers.

Everyone has their own opinion on the Hall of Fame member. Is he a club legend? Does he deserve to be mentioned alongside Gary Stevens or Sandy Jardine?

One thing that can’t be disputed is his incredible number of goals and assists over the past nine years. Yes, he has made a mistake or two along the way, but he is still, significantly, in credit for how important he has been over the years.
