Cambridge United has officially welcomed Korey Smith as their latest signing, securing him on a two-year contract as announced on their website. Despite being 33 years old, Smith remains in good form, and his signing reflects manager Gary Monk’s confidence in his ability to contribute over the next couple of years.

Smith’s move to Cambridge might raise eyebrows considering his recent tenure in League One with Derby County, where he played a key role in their promotion to the Championship. He featured in 32 matches for Derby, starting in 22, until a knee injury sidelined him from late November to February.

Cambridge’s acquisition of Smith is seen as a positive step, bringing considerable quality from higher levels of competition. With a solid record of 245 appearances in the Championship for clubs like Norwich City, Barnsley, Bristol City, and Swansea City, Smith is expected to bolster Cambridge’s squad significantly.

Smith initially made a mark at Norwich City during their promotion-winning League One campaign in 2009/10 and later repeated the feat with Bristol City in 2014/15. While Cambridge’s immediate goal is likely survival rather than promotion, Smith’s winning mentality is seen as a valuable asset.

Manager Gary Monk expressed his satisfaction with the signing, highlighting Smith’s pedigree and experience in higher divisions, which he believes will enhance the team’s quality and competitiveness.
