Derby County, a club in the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division, has signed former Birmingham City goalkeeper Lucy Jones on a free transfer. The Ewe Rams shared the news on their official website this evening.

Jones, 19, left Birmingham City earlier this summer after spending six years with the club. During her time there, she progressed through the youth ranks to the fringes of the first team. She made her senior debut as a substitute in a 2-1 loss to Leicester City in the Barclays Women’s Super League in February 2022, her only first team appearance at St Andrew’s.

Highly rated but needing regular game time to develop, Jones now aims to showcase her best form with Derby County in the third tier.

Upon joining the Ewe Rams, Jones said, “Everything’s amazing. Settling into the squad, all of the girls are amazing, Sam [Griffiths] is brilliant, so I’m really looking forward to the season. The facilities are lovely, the pitches and the environment that it creates; it’s just a very nice place to be. It’d be nice if we can stay in the cup, get to the final and win it. As a goalkeeper, clean sheets are a big thing for me and my defense too. I’m hoping that we can push for as many clean sheets as possible throughout the season.”

Jones is one of four new signings announced by Derby County today.
