Millwall and QPR stand to receive a significant financial boost following a decision by the EFL aimed at enhancing the visibility and commercial appeal of its leagues. The EFL recently secured a lucrative television deal with Sky Sports worth £935 million, which includes substantial upfront payments and additional marketing benefits. This agreement will increase the number of televised matches domestically, with some Championship and Carabao Cup games also set to air on ITV from January 2025.
In addition to the domestic deal, the EFL finalized an international broadcast agreement in May with Relevent Sports and Pitch International, described as a record deal in terms of revenue for the league. EFL Chief Executive Trevor Birch emphasized that these partnerships will not only ensure guaranteed revenue for clubs but also elevate the EFL as a premium football brand globally.
The latest development sees the EFL initiating a tender process for producing a documentary series that will spotlight the Championship, League One, and League Two. This initiative aims to expand the leagues’ presence in the USA market, mirroring the success of Wrexham’s ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary, which significantly boosted the club’s fanbase and commercial opportunities.
Ben Wright, EFL’s Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted the documentary series as a unique opportunity for production partners to showcase the drama and excitement of EFL competitions on a global stage. The move is expected to bolster the profiles of clubs like Millwall and QPR, offering them enhanced financial prospects and broader international exposure.
