Veteran journalist Phil Rothfield argues that the Melbourne Storm should release Jason Ryles so the incoming Eels coach can start reshaping the struggling club’s roster. Speaking on NRL 360, Rothfield insisted that Ryles, who is set to coach Parramatta next season, should not continue with the Storm for the remainder of 2024.

“He’s now employed by another club to plan for next year,” Rothfield stated. “If you’re working for another employer, you’ve got to go.”

Rothfield pointed out that the Sydney Roosters took a similar stance when Ryles was linked with St George last year, emphasizing that full-time commitment is necessary for such roles, especially given the significant roster decisions Ryles will face at Parramatta.

However, there was debate on the consistency of such policies, with comparisons drawn to other coaches like Wayne Bennett and Shane Flanagan. Despite this, Rothfield maintained that Ryles needs to begin his duties at Parramatta soon, given the extensive rebuild required for the Eels’ roster.

According to NRL 360 host Braith Anasta, Ryles is expected to meet with Storm management to discuss his immediate future, with indications suggesting he will be released to focus on Parramatta’s challenges, including managing salary cap complexities and potential player movements.
