Trey Yesavage, a right-handed pitcher from East Carolina University, was chosen by the Toronto Blue Jays as their first pick in Major League Baseball’s amateur draft on Sunday night. Standing at 6-foot-4, Yesavage had an impressive season with the East Carolina University Pirates, earning recognition as the American Athletic Conference’s pitcher of the year. He was selected 20th overall by the Jays.

Yesavage is known for his powerful fastball, which has been recorded at 95 mph and peaks at 98 mph. He complements his fastball with a sharp curveball in the low-80s and a splitter that matches similar velocities. Described as physically imposing at 225 pounds, Yesavage will celebrate his 21st birthday later this month.

For their second pick at 59th overall, the Blue Jays opted for another right-handed pitcher, Khal Stephen, from Mississippi State University. Stephen, also 6-foot-4, is praised for his repertoire of pitches, including a mid-90s fastball that he commands effectively. He began his collegiate career as a reliever at Purdue University before becoming the top starter for the Boilermakers during his sophomore year. Following a successful stint in the Cape Cod League, Stephen transferred to Mississippi State, where he continued to refine his skills throughout the spring season.
