NSW debutant Mitchell Barnett has disclosed how he nearly retired last year due to a recurring neck injury. The tough forward underwent surgery for a damaged disc in 2020, but the problem resurfaced early last season, leading him to seriously consider walking away from rugby league. With family responsibilities in mind, Barnett weighed his options carefully, eventually deciding to make one final attempt to salvage his career in the sport.
“I was very close to retiring,” Barnett revealed. “My eldest son was just over 12 months old at the time, and I was experiencing a lot of pain while playing in New Zealand. Surgeons advised me to consider retirement, but once I received clearance to continue playing rugby league, my decision was clear.”
Barnett’s journey to State of Origin has been characterized by perseverance, having spent nearly a decade in the NRL before earning this opportunity. Beginning his career at the Raiders in 2015 and later moving to Newcastle before joining the Warriors, Barnett acknowledges making mistakes and needing time to mature both on and off the field.
Since moving to Auckland, Barnett has elevated his game, contributing significantly to the Warriors’ progress to last year’s preliminary final despite the team’s challenges with consistency this season. His statistics have shown improvement across key metrics in 2024, with increased running meters, tackle breaks, and tackles made, while also reducing missed tackles.
Despite facing a six-game suspension in 2022, Barnett insists his transformation began before that incident. He credits a supportive coach at the Warriors, Andrew Webster, and the belief shown by club management for helping him rediscover his form. Barnett is now focused on making the most of his Origin debut, emphasizing his commitment to consistent preparation and staying true to the qualities that have brought him success.
Wednesday’s State of Origin decider at Suncorp Stadium marks a significant milestone for Barnett, who remains determined to approach the game with the same focus and determination that has defined his season.
