On Saturday, the Minnesota Wild made a move in free agency by signing defenseman Declan Chisholm to a one-year, $1 million contract extension for the 2024-25 season, as reported by Michael Russo of The Athletic.
Chisholm, who was a restricted free agent, saw his previous one-year, $775,000 contract expire at the end of the 2023-24 season.
During the last season, the 24-year-old played in 31 NHL games across two teams. He started with the Winnipeg Jets, where he registered one assist in two games. After being placed on waivers, Chisholm was claimed by Minnesota on January 29, 2024. He went on to play 29 games with the Wild, scoring eight points (three goals, five assists), accumulating 18 penalty minutes, and posting a minus-8 rating while averaging a career-high 16:52 of ice time. In total, Chisholm has nine points (three goals, six assists) in 33 career NHL games.
Primarily, Chisholm has played in the American Hockey League (AHL) since turning professional. In 146 AHL games with the Manitoba Moose, the Winnipeg Jets’ affiliate, the Ontario native recorded 91 points (16 goals, 75 assists) and a minus-9 rating. He also added 11 points (two goals, nine assists) with a plus-2 rating in 10 Calder Cup Playoff games. His best professional season was in 2022-23, where he notched a career-high 43 points (five goals, 38 assists) in 59 AHL games with the Moose.
Before turning pro, Chisholm was a standout defenseman for the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Over four seasons from 2016 to 2020, he amassed 142 points (22 goals, 120 assists) in 214 games. He concluded his junior career with 69 points (13 goals, 56 assists) in 59 games while serving as an alternate captain during the 2019-20 season.
