Paul Warne Highlights Positions Derby County Still Need to Strengthen Ahead of Season

Derby County have been highly active in the transfer market, enhancing their squad in both attack and midfield. Key signings include Ben Osborn from Sheffield United and Dutch midfielder Kenzo Goudmijn, bolstering their ranks for the 2024/25 Championship campaign. Additionally, the Rams are close to bringing back Gambian international Ebou Adams from Cardiff City for a reported fee of £900,000.

In attack, Derby has secured the loan signing of Jerry Yates and added Kayden Jackson from Ipswich Town, increasing their goal-scoring options. Despite these additions, manager Paul Warne has indicated that further reinforcements are necessary.

Dominic Dietrich reported on X: “Paul Warne says they’ve still got a long way to go in the window. He outlined defensively they need strengthening, a goalkeeper or two, and three or four midfielders. Also mentioned the front line could be strengthened again.”

Warne’s task is compounded by the departures of Louie Sibley, Conor Hourihane, and Korey Smith, pivotal players in Derby’s promotion from League One last season.

Are Derby County in Need of Widespread Changes?

Warne has emphasized the need for additional signings to prepare his team for the Championship. Goalkeepers are a top priority, as Josh Vickers is currently the only option. Defensively, the team lacks depth and Championship experience, areas Warne is keen to address.

However, the necessity for three or four more midfielders may be overstated. With Adams reportedly close to rejoining, Derby has several midfield options. Instead, the focus should shift to securing one or two midfield additions and prioritizing at least two more attacking players.

While Jackson and Yates are solid additions, Derby needs at least one more striker of similar Championship quality to ensure a robust attack. This strategic approach will help balance the squad and avoid overloading the midfield.
