Kosar’s health issues came to a head during a Browns game against the New York Jets in December when he felt unwell and nearly couldn’t make it home. “My body gave out on me,” he recounted. Ignoring his symptoms until the new year, Kosar eventually sought medical help and received a massive blood transfusion. His hemoglobin levels were alarmingly low, prompting immediate concern from his doctors.

He was diagnosed with liver disease approximately 16 months ago and has been managing symptoms for several years. Recently, the situation has worsened, and Dr. Michael Roizen of the Cleveland Clinic estimates a 90% chance that Kosar will need a liver transplant. Additionally, in February, Kosar was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, adding to his health challenges.

Kosar’s Football Legacy

Kosar’s football career began with a stellar performance at the University of Miami, where he threw for 5,971 yards and 40 touchdowns over two seasons. His early graduation enabled the Browns to select him in the 1985 supplemental draft’s first round. With the Browns, Kosar amassed 21,904 passing yards and 116 touchdowns, achieving an 81.6 passer rating and earning a Pro Bowl selection in 1987.

After being replaced by Vinny Testaverde in the 1993 season, Kosar joined the Dallas Cowboys, filling in for an injured Troy Aikman. He later signed with the Miami Dolphins, backing up Dan Marino from 1994 to 1996. Kosar’s career with the Dolphins included 987 passing yards, five touchdowns, and an 81.2 passer rating. He is also remembered for his strategic contribution to Marino’s famous fake-spike play, leading to a game-winning touchdown against the New York Jets in 1994.

Post-Retirement and Health Challenges

Following his retirement, Kosar faced various health issues, including headaches, insomnia, and slurred speech. Despite these challenges, he remained active in the football community and media. However, his recent health diagnoses have brought new struggles. Kosar’s liver disease and Parkinson’s have significantly impacted his quality of life, and he is now on the transplant list, awaiting a new liver.
