NHL insider Chris Johnston suggests it’s more likely that Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner will leave in free agency rather than sign a contract extension. Marner, who is entering the final year of a $65.4 million deal, has been a subject of trade talks but remains with the Maple Leafs as the season approaches.
Johnston noted on the SDPN podcast on July 8 that the odds favor Marner hitting the open market rather than committing to an extension in Toronto. He emphasized the mutual interest in potentially parting ways, indicating it’s not solely Marner’s decision to stay.
Should Marner depart in free agency without a trade, it would be a significant loss for the Maple Leafs, who have the option to explore trading him to salvage assets. Despite the uncertainties, Marner has expressed his desire to remain in Toronto, citing his deep connection to the city where he grew up and the team that drafted him fourth overall in 2015.
Newly appointed head coach Craig Berube has expressed enthusiasm about coaching Marner, praising his character and skill as a pivotal player for the team. Marner’s recent performance underscores his value, having tallied 85 points in 69 regular-season games and contributing to the playoffs with 3 points in 7 games last season.
