Sidney Crosby is expected to finalize a new deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins soon, according to Rob Rossi of The Athletic. The 37-year-old forward, whose current contract expires at the end of the upcoming season, has been the subject of speculation about a potential departure from Pittsburgh to pursue another Stanley Cup.
Despite his agent, Pat Brisson, suggesting the possibility of Crosby leaving, it now appears Crosby is set to continue his career with the Penguins. The new contract is rumored to be a three-year deal worth around $10 million annually. This marks an increase from his previous $8.7 million annual salary, a nod to his connection with the number 87.
Although details are not yet official, sources indicate that both the team and Crosby are confident that an agreement will be reached soon. Crosby’s performance remains exceptional despite his age, making him one of the few players capable of securing a salary increase at this stage in his career.
Crosby was reportedly disappointed by the departure of Jake Guentzel at the trade deadline but still appears committed to the Penguins, joining long-time teammates Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang in staying with the team. Crosby’s intention to finish his career in Pittsburgh seems clear, leaving it to General Manager Kyle Dubas to assemble a team that can give Crosby another shot at the Stanley Cup.
Seeing Crosby in any uniform other than the Penguins’ would indeed be unusual, but it looks like Pittsburgh fans won’t have to worry about that scenario just yet.
