Geelong coach Chris Scott expressed a flexible approach to utilizing their top players for the remainder of the season after the Cats returned to the top four with a convincing victory. Meanwhile, it was a challenging day for the Hawks, particularly with forward Mitch Lewis sustaining a heavy knock late in the game, casting doubt on his availability for the next match against Fremantle.

Scott highlighted the positional adjustments made in recent weeks, which contributed to their strong performance against the Hawks. Sam De Koning impressed in the ruck, Tom Stewart continued to shine as an inside midfielder, and Jeremy Cameron showed signs of returning to peak form. The Cats established an early lead and maintained it, ultimately securing a 51-point victory.

Scott emphasized the need to remain adaptable in team strategy, noting, “I’ve never been more of the mind that you have got to keep an open mind.” He downplayed concerns about Patrick Dangerfield’s hamstring, explaining that substituting him out during the final quarter was precautionary.

In contrast, Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell acknowledged the gap between his team and the top contenders despite recent improvements. He cited difficulties in covering defensive losses and uncertainties over injured players returning for future games.

Looking ahead, Geelong faces Collingwood in a crucial upcoming match, with Scott acknowledging the challenges in a competitive season. He praised Shaun Mannagh for his performance in his return to the team, highlighting the effectiveness of the Cats’ forward line.

Mitchell conceded that despite their recent wins, Hawthorn still needs further improvement to compete consistently against top teams. He noted their struggles in gaining territory and initiating attacks effectively during the match against Geelong’s disciplined defense.
