The Minnesota Vikings are on the verge of re-signing running back Cam Akers, nearly a year after acquiring him via trade, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The move is contingent on Akers passing a physical.

Akers, 25, has been a free agent since his contract expired in March. The 2020 second-round pick was initially brought in from the Los Angeles Rams last September. He played in six games as a rotational back behind Alexander Mattison before a season-ending Achilles tear in November.

Akers is renowned for his swift recovery from a previous Achilles tear, famously returning to action just five months after the injury to help the Rams secure a Super Bowl title in 2021. He posted a career-high 786 rushing yards for the Rams the following year.

If Akers returns to Minnesota, he’ll reunite with head coach Kevin O’Connell, who was Sean McVay’s offensive coordinator during Akers’ tenure with the Rams. His position in the running back depth chart remains uncertain, with former Green Bay Packers star Aaron Jones leading a revamped backfield that also includes the speedy Ty Chandler.

In his six games for the Vikings last season, Akers amassed over 200 scrimmage yards and caught 11 passes as an occasional third-down option.
