Done Deal: Charlton Athletic Complete Signing of Coventry City Striker.

Charlton Athletic is thrilled to announce the signing of Matty Godden from Coventry City for an undisclosed fee.

The seasoned striker, who netted nine goals in 25 starts for the Sky Bet Championship side last season, has committed to a two-year contract, with an option for an additional year.

Godden previously lifted the Sky Bet League One title with Coventry and was their top scorer, earning a spot in the 2019/20 PFA League One Team of the Year.

Commenting on his move, Godden said, “The manager and I both have aligned goals, which was crucial in my decision to come here.”

Manager Nathan Jones expressed his excitement about the signing, saying, “Matt’s a fantastic addition to the club. He’s a proven goalscorer at every level. We’ve pursued him all summer, and he showed a real desire to join us.”

Technical Director Andy Scott added, “We’re pleased to bring Matt to Charlton. His record highlights his goal-scoring ability and his contribution with physicality and hold-up play. He’s a hard worker and fits well with Nathan’s playing style. This summer, we aim to add quality and experience to our young squad, and Matt embodies that.”

Godden, originally from Canterbury, began his career with Scunthorpe United and made his professional debut in September 2010. He gained experience through various loan spells before rejoining Ebbsfleet United permanently in May 2014, where he scored 43 goals in 82 appearances.

He then moved to Stevenage in 2016, where he scored 21 goals in his debut season and was named the club’s Player of the Year. After a successful stint at Peterborough United, he joined Coventry, where he played a key role in their promotion to the Championship and scored 50 goals in 110 starts over five years.

With 460 career appearances under his belt, Godden brings a wealth of experience to the Addicks.
