Tonight’s premiere of “Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants” promises to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the team’s blockbuster trade for Panthers edge rusher Brian Burns.

The story began during the Senior Bowl, where Giants General Manager Joe Schoen approached Panthers General Manager Dan Morgan with a question: would Carolina be interested in trading for the Giants’ No. 6 overall pick? Morgan declined, stating, “If I’m going anywhere, it’s going back.” However, Morgan revealed that Burns was available for trade.

“You want to give us two ones for Burns?” Morgan asked. Schoen’s interest was piqued, responding with an “Ooh!”

“No. I mean, yes, but…,” Schoen added, sparking a negotiation.

Morgan proposed, “Or a one and something.”

“OK,” Schoen replied, indicating the Giants’ willingness to deal.

After a month of negotiations, the Giants traded their 2024 second- and fifth-round selections (Nos. 39 and 141 overall) and a 2025 conditional fifth-rounder to the Panthers for Burns and a 2024 fourth-round pick (No. 166). Keeping their first-round draft pick, the Giants selected receiver Malik Nabers.

Burns, who was franchise-tagged by the Panthers, was signed by the Giants to a five-year, $150 million contract. At 26, Burns leaves Carolina after five seasons, amassing 46 sacks, 95 quarterback hits, 59 tackles for loss, and eight forced fumbles. He joins Kayvon Thibodeaux and Dexter Lawrence as stars on the Giants’ defense.
